A low frequency wideband depth sounder for sea ice
نویسنده
چکیده
Sea ice plays an important role in the Earth climate system. Techniques used in the past to determine sea ice thickness had fundamental limitations in terms of spatial and temporal coverage. We performed extensive simulations using published ice-core data from both polar regions, and our results suggested the use of a UHF radar system (300-1300 MHz) for sounding thin Antarctic sea ice and thin ice in the Arctic and a VHF radar system (50-250 MHz) for sounding thick Arctic sea ice. Based on the simulation results, we designed a prototype radar system that operates on both the frequency ranges. We have successfully used the system to collect data over sea ice at Barrow, Alaska. The experiments show that with our system, we can measure sea ice thickness with less than 20 cm uncertainty in thickness. Keywords-sea ice; thickness; remote sensing

Design and Development of a Wideband Coherent Radar Depth Sounder
Sea level rise is an important indicator of global climate change. Sea level has been increasing at about 2mm/year over the past century and may continue to do so. The continuing rise in sea level will have a devastating impact on humanity as approximately 60% of people on this planet live in the coastal regions. The polar ice sheets, which account for 80% of earth’s fresh water supply are a ma...
متن کاملAn ultra-wideband, microwave radar for measuring snow thickness on sea ice and mapping near-surface internal layers in polar firn
Sea ice is generally covered with snow, which can vary in thickness from a few centimeters to >1m. Snow cover acts as a thermal insulator modulating the heat exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere, and it impacts sea-ice growth rates and overall thickness, a key indicator of climate change in polar regions. Snow depth is required to estimate sea-ice thickness using freeboard measurements...
متن کاملA New Coherent Radar for Ice Sounding in Greenland
This paper will discuss a new multifrequency dual channel coherent radar depth sounder for sounding ice. This sounder is unique, since it is a fully coherent chirp radar designed to operate at low (1,500ft) as well as high altitudes (30,000ft). The dynamic range of the radar is sufficient for simultaneously imaging both the top and bottom returns from ice without the need for data blanking or S...
متن کاملOptimal Sar Processing Beamwidth for High Altitude Airborne Radar Depth Sounder Data
Future sea-level rise will have significant impacts on populations living in costal regions, and the development of coastal infrastructure. Adaptation to these changes to minimize the negative consequences requires improved sea-level rise predictions. While there are several contributors to changes in sea level, future changes in the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets are perhaps the least unde...
متن کاملA Semi-Automatic Approach for Estimating Bedrock and Surface Layers from Multichannel Coherent Radar Depth Sounder Imagery
The dynamic responses of the polar ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica can have substantial impacts on sea level rise. Understanding the mass balance requires accurate assessments of the bedrock and surface layers, but identifying each layer is performed subjectively by time-consuming, dense hand selection. We have developed an approach for semi-automatically estimating bedrock and surface l...
